Oh, Hi Ed, nice to see you answer the question.
So, let me see if I understand you correctly. You're basically saying we should ignore the vote in both houses of Congress and The Presidency on the issue of whether we should attack Iraq, and instead, decide sometime after the vote, (when it has been further ratified years later by the American people to re-elect those same people), to change our position because of a few polls? Please explain to me how this would work Ed, I'm really curious here, what poll should we follow? Who should be the harbinger of whether the American people *knew* enough information or whether they had the correct information? You? Or perhaps the minority who disagreed with the original decion to take out the Husein regime? What number should we use to determine the outcome? Is a 50.1% poll enough to swing the military forces in one direction or another? I can see it now. The Congress votes to go to war and the Commander in Chief has made the decision, but wait...A new poll shows the American people by a 51-49% margin no longer support the effort. Bring back the troops, call off the aircraft carriers, stop the planes!
Let's have another scenerio. The congress and President decide to take military action against a despicable regime, and we move thousands of personnel into place, attack and one week later the enemy doesn't roll over and play dead, so a pacifist poll comes out showing the American people no longer support the effort. STOP THE ATTACK, NEW POLL JUST OUT FROM CBS NEWS!
Puleeze!
All I can say is, at least you had the guts to answer the question, which is more than I can say for everyone else who participates on this thread.
No Ed, despite your emotional rhetoric, no one is taking casualties lightly, and based on the re-enlistments in the war zone, it appears the American military who are risking their lives believe the job they are doing is winnable and worth the effort. They also believe in the cause we voted to support.
The way I look at is this. War is hell, and we make the decision as a nation to go to war reluctantly and after careful debate and deliberation. Some Americans will no doubt strongly oppose the decision, however, once we've made the decision we're all on the *same team* and we get behind the effort to support the cause! Because, losing is not an option!
Most of us won't be fighting on the front lines, but we can support our troops, our military and our Commander in Chief in a thousand different ways. Bearing in mind the main thing we don't want to do is support our enemy and give them any hope they will achieve victory.
From the outset of this war, what I've seen from the ones who lost the debate is nothing more than sedition and for many treason. Every effort possible they can make on boards such as these has been designed to destroy the morale of our troops and give support to terrorist. The mainstream liberal media has been on the same crusade. The debate was over long ago. Both Houses of Congress and the President made a difficult decision after months of debate and discussion with the American people. Those who support terrorists at the expense of our victory will have to answer to themselves when this is all over. Make no mistake, this will be over and we will achieve victory despite the seditionists who live among. Because, every culture values freedom when given the opportunity, the same will be true of Iraq once enough time has passed and they are able to muster the military and political forces necessary to deal with the remnants of Batthists and terrorists who value just the opposite. The courage they have shown to go to the polls and vote lends significant credence to that eventuality.
Those who wish to scream bloody murder and pretend they care about the troops, but use words and actions which describe nothing more than support for the enemy, will have to one day answer to themselves.
People who have studied history and can write about it in context understand that better than most. |
