From your last posting:

"Hedge-fund assets now total nearly $1 trillion -- double that of five years ago -- and account for more than 70% of the daily activity in the convertible-securities market"

If hedge funds dominate convertibles you can bet it's so that they can short the common ("with impunity" lol)

Consistent with my last posting, I surmise that these shorts are not naked because they are covered by the CV.... I believe they do not even have to be declared as shorts, but they do increase the float, with phantom shares.

FWIW..I follow a gold stock that in 2002 was trading on a parity with Barrick. Then it issued a substantial Cv Deb in US$. Such a US$ debt for a canadian gold miner, is tantamount to a "short" of the US$ which has declined both in terms of the C$ and of gold since then. Nevertheless, its common shares have languished..... I have no doubt because of the hedging shorts whether by hedge funds or by financial institution following hedge fund strategies.

Who cares ? IMHO this only leads to value at current prices.
