56K Modem Standard Put On Hold Untill January

By Mark Boslet

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--An international standards body has delayed
until at least January an agreement that would unify the two incompatible designs
of fast 56K modems.

The International Telecommunications Union put off until January a vote - or what
it calls a determination - on a draft standard because several technical issues
remained unresolved, according to a Rockwell International Corp. (ROK)
spokesman.

There were three major sticking points among ITU members, and the group "just
ran out of time," said the spokesman, who attended the meeting.

Union members had hoped to hash out a standard to enable x2 modems from
3Com Corp. (COMS) and K56flex modems from companies such as Rockwell,
Lucent Technologies Inc (LU) and Motorola Inc. (MOT) to communicate with one
another.

The 56K modems receive data at a theortical top speed of 56,000 bits per
second, almost double the performance of the previous generation of 33.6K
modems.

The Rockwell spokesman said of the 26 issues unresolved at the start of this
week's work sessions, 15 remained open. Of those, three were deemed
controversal.

The ITU is to meet in Geneva, Switzerland, in January.

3Com officials were not immediately available to comment on the standards
meeting.
