Still... his conclusion that was reported back to the CIA, as the CIA has stated, was that Saddam had not acquired any yellow cake from Niger (for, among several other reasons, there being no yellow cake to acquire: for several years the French had maintained absolute control over the mines and ore processing... and all the production was pre-sold... and monitored by the UN. Niger shared in the profits, but had no control over the operation).

So it would have been fairly logical to conclude that the document was likely a forgery, since it was not supported by facts....

(PS --- the Italian press has lately been all over the issue of *who* created the forgery, and then tried to market it around the world... they have put names and faces to a number of Italians implicated in the past for intelligence scams and forgeries. Supposedly, the document was provided to Italian intelligence, after others refused to pay, which is who then shared it with the Brits... then one of the two shared with the Yanks, etc. The Italian press is selling this story as a political scandal --- while implying that Berlisconi benefited by shopping the document....)
