Sun Micro Telecom Customers Likely Delayed Buys

Sun Microsystems

Standard & Poor's Equity Research analyst Megan Graham-Hackett reiterated a "hold" rating on Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) after the company missed her fiscal first-quarter estimates.

Sun reported an operating loss of 2 cents per share; Graham-Hackett had expected earnings of 1 cent per share. Revenue for the quarter also disappointed, "as server sales to financial services retreated after recent progress, and also fell to telcos, as customers likely delayed buys ahead of new Sun servers," the analyst wrote in a research report.

Gross margin "held up reasonably well, in our view, given a shift to low-end servers," but expenses were still high.

Graham-Hackett kept Sun's fiscal 2006 earnings estimate at 5 cents per share.
