A scientific approach to the question of legalizing gay marriage would entail anthropological research to identify cultures in which gay marriage existed and explore the ramifications of that. A scientific approach to the question of gay marriage should entail trying to resolve the issue of whether being gay is a "free choice" or "sin", as the vast bulk of those opposed to gay marriage think it is, or if it has some physical cause not under the intellectual control of the individual. You might want to go on record with your views on the matter. FWIW I'm 100% sure that there are natural explanations for homosexuality that have zero to do with "sin".
