If Ariel Sharon was relying on assurances from the PA, he should have verified their ability to enforce their directives. I choose to disbelieve that Sharon thought it would be better than this. This is why I believe he has a larger endgame in mind. IMHO the alternate explanation is that he was willing to exchange total anarchy and hostility in Gaza to remove the potential of being criticised as being colonial or for interfering with their "neighbors".
