Alcatel announces FTTx customers in Japan; FTTX; Fiber to the X; Compagnie Financiere Alcatel and Itochu Cable Systems come together
Alcatel announced that its FTTU (Fiber-to-the-User) solution has been selected and deployed in Japan for the network of a local cable TV operator and a municipal authority, respectively, to deliver high-speed Internet and video services to residential users. These projects will be completed in collaboration with Itochu Cable Systems, a leading system integrator in Japanese cable TV, broadband, and broadcast media.
The two projects enable City Cable Shunan Corporation, a cable TV operator in the Yamaguchi prefecture, and the municipal authority of the Kijimadaira town in the Nagano prefecture, to offer one of the industry's best dual video/high-speed Internet experiences available in the market today.
Itochu Cable Systems is utilizing the Alcatel 7340 Packet Optical Line Terminal (P-OLT) and the Alcatel 7340 Home Optical Network Terminal (H-ONT) to build both networks. Alcatel's FTTU solution offers a low-risk, high-capacity solution with superior value to service providers, enabling them to deliver reliable and quality user-centric broadband services. In addition, the Alcatel 7340 BPON solution provides customers with a migration path to the recently announced 7342 ISAM GPON solution.
Koichi Hamamoto, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of Itochu Cable Systems, Broadband Network Division, said, "We chose Alcatel's FTTU solution because it provides a superior platform for bundled services and enables our customers to offer reliable high-speed Internet access and video services over a single optical fiber. We strongly believe the strength of Alcael's solution can meet the end user demand for quality and reliable broadband services in a highly advanced market like Japan."
"The two projects represent a significant business breakthrough for Alcatel in one of the most dynamic and competitive FTTU markets in the world. I believe our customers benefit from high reliability and reduced maintenance expenses as a result of deploying an all-optical access network," said Michel Rahier, in charge of Alcatel's fixed communications activities.

Alcatel to Provide Local Fibre-Optic Connectivity in Kuwait
French vendor Alcatel this week announced that it had been selected by Kuwait's Ministry of Communications (MoC) to provide a gigabit optical access network. The value of the deal has not been disclosed. Significance: Alcatel joins Germany's Siemens in supplying gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology to the MoC as part of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) project. The objective of the MoC is to begin offering triple-play services over the technology from the beginning of 2006.
