A stock split is one of the few things that has been shown to be a statistically valid predictor of rising stock prices (i.e., the majority of stocks tend to trade higher after splits have been announced - unfortunately you can't take advantage of this because you would have to buy before the announcements). Experts say the reason for this is that the shareholders have learned that management only annonce such split when they are fairly condfident that the business will be strong, at least in the immediate future.
