Not surprised. Italy, through whatever mechanism or reason, managed to insert itself into the middle of this whole mess. Were they they pawns of the (US)neocons, or were they playing their own game? Hard to say which. Regardless the Italians are involved, either by request or on their own initiative. Either way, their attempts to sweep it under the rug shouldn't be allowed. That is, if they want a democratic system... An interesting struggle is under way in Italian politics...Berlusconi is a conservative patrician, media magnate, who is trying to hold on to power, in the face of strong opposition from Romano Prodi, who he trails in the polls. Berlusconi has been trying to change key legislation to make it more difficult for him to be displaced from power, should he lose the elections...and apparently the only obstacle in his way is a veto from Italy's president, who is otherwise a figure head in the Italian parliamentary system.
