Thanks for sharing those views, Mike. Re: They love to talk about the ups and downs in America... Do you get the feeling that many there in Italy or other places in Europe, really do understand what is going on here in the States? Most of our states are bigger than their entire country. Our population is transient...theirs tends to stay in one area for a lengthy time as a rule....ours is a Heinz mix of people, and somehow, I don't believe theirs is the same in that regard.
Do the folks there get any kind of reasonable news about any of the good things that happen in the US?
It's so difficult, even if you are in the US, to get any kind of coverage that is rather unbiased....Tonight, for instance, I was reading the local weekly for our little town that came out today. On the op-ed page, they have a weekly "What do you think about....pick a topic....that the local newsie asks the man/woman on the street...of the 7 pictures and in reply to the question: "What do you think of the Scooter Libby situation"..... 2 of them have education careers, teaching our kids, or in curriculum development, and both were very positive that "It was about time that they got caught (paraphrasing their remarks), and the 3rd of the 7, was in sales to the schools, and was just sure that there was more behind the "Bush mess" (words that Howard Dean could have written)...2 were neutral, and 2 were pretty sure that it was a "no big deal thing, blown out of proportion".....
If we can't get the info correct here in this country, I'm not sure how Europeans ever could either. |
