I was talking with a friend recently who owns a small shop in Italy and came to the conclusion one reason for the high youth unemployment in Italy is because of the free health care.

Here is the way it was described to me. For each worker a business hires, they have to pay about 1K to the government for health care per month, on top of their salary. So naturally, you don't see as many temporary workers, which is something young people typical apply for. So, the service industry is either closed or filled with full time workers.

Not sure what the laws are in Germany, but I was interested to learn the other day all the shop owners belong to a union in the towns around Garmish, and set prices on Steiner Mugs based on joint agreement.

So much for flee markets and Made in China copies being sold here!
