| Steve Altman said in the same conference call, to my recollection, that competitors, including some of the EU complainants, do the same thing. Broadcom has a different agenda from those with whom it is acting in concert, as it needs to acquire a license, already held by the others. I expect that Qualcomm will file the next salvo by early next year, for intentional violation of its core patent rights, seeking TRO, injunction, and treble damages, as Broadcom has made it clear it will begin recording revenues from its WCDMA Zyray Spinner chip by year end, ramping in the first calendar quarter. The 5 back-up singers were sold on the proposition that their quest for lower royalties at renewal time could be served by supporting Broadcom, and are simply opportunistic hitchhikers. Since it has no WCDMA business, and therefore nothing to lose, Broadcom is willing to become a suicide bomber to the industry, if necessary. The shame is that the incumbent co-conspirators are risking serious damage to the global WCDMA market in, as Altman aptly suggests,an attempt to rewrite history. |
