U3 smart drive platform drawing interest in Taiwan

Josephine Lin, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 3 November 2005]

In line with the substantial influence that SanDisk and M-Systems hold in the flash disk market, Taiwan memory module makers are aggressively looking to join their co-developed U3 platform in order to preserve their market share.

On the heels of Kingston Technology and SanDisk debuting U3 flash drive solutions, flash drive supplier M-Systems announced the availability of U3 smart drives from its OEM partners in mid October, with leading memory module makers including Kingston, Data Storage, Memorex and Verbatim introducing products.

Using the embedded U3 platform, users are able to launch numerous personalized applications from a flash drive to any PC.

Industry sources hinted that most of the U3-supported flash disks are produced by SanDisk and M-Systems, and those two players have 50% of the USB flash disk market.

SanDisk and M-Systems reportedly aim to increase the penetration rate of their co-developed U3 platform to 40% of the flash disk market in 2006. According to Gartner Dataquest, worldwide shipments of USB flash drives will reach 173.2 million units in 2009 with smart drives accounting for 69% of the total.
