Thomas: I agree that if the only differentiator between NCs and PCs is price, NCs are in trouble. Although there was an interesting statement a week or two back from some senior official at IBM that they were thinking of 'giving away!' the NC if customers would sign a software and support contract. Retracted and denied three hours later, but provocative.

If NCs really work, they have real benefits in terms of managing large systems. They would also allow roaming users - walk up to any machine and use it as 'your own'. Software upgrades would be orders of magnitude easer. I don't know if that would be enough to make a difference - as someone who works for the CIO of a very large organization, those qualities are very appealing from an operational point of view.
