SHANHAI (AFX) - China plans to incorporate homegrown technology in a national third-generation telecommunications network scheduled for next year, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing a senior official at the Ministry of Information Industry.

Chen Jinqiao, director of the China Academy of Telecommunications Research at the ministry, told the newspaper that a national TD-SCDMA network will be constructed, and at least one telecom operator will chose to build TD-SCDMA networks.

His comments come amid speculation that the domestically developed TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) technology would be adopted only in provincial networks because of its immaturity, the newspaper said.

He also warned that supply in mobile phone industry outstrips demand and that some 30 pct of the China's handset makers will go out of business in the next two years.
