Re Treasury direct
Can only hold savings bonds with one social security number, but I have opened 4 accounts, me, my wife and 2 kids. I view my savings bond holdings (getting pretty substantial) as a safe, relatively lucrative place to be in the "muddle through" economy of the last couple of years and into the near term (2-4 years)future. Because of the compounding and no tax payments, if you can wait out even longer (10-15 years) these can really become valuable investments.
Unfortunately, as of earlier this year, the EE bond rates are now fixed. Prior to that they floated, so those bond rates go up (or down) depending on the five year treasury. (I'm expecting up over the next 5 to 10 years)
