Another excellent example of external pressure resulting in positive results is the ending of Apartheid in South Africa. www-cs-students.stanford.edu South Africa has done a couple of truly notable things besides ending Apartheid. They developed and then voluntarily gave up nuclear weapons, out of simple common sense. Instead of Nuremburg-style show trials after Apartheid, they had the truly remarkable "Truth and Reconciliation" process where the perpetrators of human rights abuses would be forgiven after a full confession and airing of their crimes. cns.miis.edu doj.gov.za Sometimes I wish the sole remaining superpower had South Africa's leadership!
