South Africa did indeed do some remarkable things. I once suggested on SI (LindyBill's thread??) that the USA should have hauled in Mandela following the invasion to oversee a 'Truth & Reconciliation' style adjustment for Iraq, between Sunni, Shia, & Kurd. IIRC, the idea was roundly shot down by those who advocated a bigger hammer approach.

Oddly enough, although SA gave up nuclear weapons, it is widely believed they collaborated with Israel on their development, with the only likely test occurring off the southern coast of S. Africa. IIRC, Saddam also had long range mechanised artillery from S Africa which was a source of US concern in Gulf I, since it was longer range than anything the US had. Strange world!
