Eric L.,

I think you are way off base in your contention that Qualcomm didn't do much to invent cellular CDMA. To compete in today's marketplace, all Cellular Systems need support two critical features, (a) A scheme for reuse of almost 1, and (b) A technique to improve the performance and link budget of edge users during handoff.

Both of these problems are elegantly solved by Qualcomm's patents on pseudo-random coding and the method for soft handoff which greatly improves the link budget and capacity of a CDMA system. These things aren't obvious and the very first implementation of soft handoff and combining almost killed Qualcomm in its early days.

Obvious? I think not.

There just aint many other wireless technologies in the universe with substantial, provably good methods to improve reuse and edge-user performane. I'd challenge you to name just a single one. Speak up or shut up.
