Honestly speaking I thing the riots are being used as a way to derail Sarkozy. He is being seen as a sure bet for 2007 elections. There might have been a way to defuse the riots but they are not being controlled to get rid of Sarkozy. As for the problem itself: The European social-democracies were constituted for a different set of circumstances. Those circumstances have disappeared by the late 70s. They have not evolved and are now begining to be solved under pressure: Germany and France are cases in point. There's still more to come, unfortunately.
