Sure, American car makers are burdened with legacy costs, but to blame unions for all of their problems is to deny the failure of management to bring these companies in the forefront of technology and quality.

I don't know that I would "blame" unions for all of it.

But there is no denying that unions are the biggest single contributor to Detroit's problems. When you union contracts that prohibit the manufacturers from ramping up the use of robots so as to save jobs, even though the robots can do the jobs faster and much, much better, how can you NOT blame the unions?

UAW workers who get laid off continue to receive 90% of their paychecks. This is stupid.

Make no mistake -- Detroit asked for it -- by allowing itself to be dominated by the unions year after year. Now, they are boxed in by it. And you can't buy a decent car from a Detroit automaker as a result.
