haqi, while I can emphasize with your post perhaps there's more behind the discrimination that you experienced than you're considering. Consider this, that after 9/11 those muslim type mom and pop businesses most likely would have experienced a marked rise of theft and verbal abuse coming from bigoted non-muslim people that entered their establishments. This in turn would breed distrust and a certain amount of derision towards non-muslim customers. Keep in mind that I'd venture to say most mom and pop store owners aren't the most enlightened people. They care mostly about making a buck and keeping their business as easy to deal with as possible.

I didn't appreciate that, told them so, and took my business to other places.

Perfect. That's exactly what should happen. This hurts the store owners where it counts, in their wallets. Once they figure out how badly their attitude hurts business their approach to non-muslims will either change or perhaps they'd go out of business. Keep in mind, treating a customer poorly is merely bad business and is vastly different than shooting someone or blowing up their car.
