Well, the Bitterroot Valley and Flathead Valley are known as banana belts because their weather is ameliorated by the mountains, and in the case of the Flathead, the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi. Orchards started in the Bitterroot perished because of high iron content in the soil, but those in the Flathead flourished until a severe freeze just a few years ago. Flathead Lake cherries were shipped world wide.
