re: you still have several years before you get the old gas guzz off the road. I believe this was looked into once before and the draw back was the length of time it would take to get any real reductions in consumption.

And your more immediate solution is... (???).

If we had started "before", we would have made progress by now, and gas prices and consumption would be lower, and declining. We have a finite resource that is draining economic (and political) strength. It's a no brainer, you give incentives to efficiency. It's not a new or socialist concept.

Look at the benefits...

*More dollars go into the economy for productive use
*Lower gas prices give even more dollars into the economy
*Balance of trade reduction with reduced imports
*Lower oil prices reduce the power of our political "enemies"
*New jobs in "high tech" fuel efficiency, maybe leading to exporting technology
*Reduced pollution (and global warming if you believe in that)

I'm sensitive to government intervention... but in this case, government intervention for the sake of fuel efficiency is clearly for the public good.

5% of the world population / 25% of consumption. We are the problem, and we can be the solution. Just takes a bit of leadership and some guts from our politicians. That last part is the rub...
