Jeff, thanks for the insight, what we need is more real perspectives on this from knowlegable people..

Also, you make a good point...
There is a lot of difference between money-costing inconvenience and a world ending apocalypse. For instance, our SCADA computer performs supervisory and control functions for hundreds of remote substations and generating plants from our central control center. Essentially one operator does the same job that used to require dozens of field personnel. Could we operate without this computer? Most certainly. (We routinely lose communication with various sites.) Would it be a pain in the @ss? Most definately. Not to mention a lot of overtime expenses. So it behooves us to make sure the computer will be functional after 2000. (It is and has been tested on our simulator.)

What it boils down to is that Y2K becomes one huge cost/benefit project where someone has to decide what to upgrade, what to fix and what to toss. Obviously there will need to be some money spent somewhere. I think a lot of the hysteria is generated by salesman who have a product, service, newsletter or stock to sell. Unfortunately it gets perpetuated by people that just don't know and by a news media who never misses a chance to simplify and sensationalize a good story.
