BEA's AquaLogic Gets Better-Than-Expected Response -Exec
By CHRIS REITER Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

November 7, 2005 5:38 p.m.
NEW YORK -- Initial market response to BEA Systems Inc.'s (BEAS) AquaLogic product has been better than expected, Bruce Graham, vice president for professional services, said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires Monday.

The performance of AquaLogic in the fiscal third quarter was "a very nice surprise," said Graham, adding that there more deals in the pipeline in the fourth quarter.

AquaLogic is BEA's platform for service-oriented architecture, or SOA - a fast growing part of the software industry. SOA is a technology strategy that uses Internet based standards to create interoperable and reusable services. AquaLogic is key for BEA, which has struggled to grow with its core application server.

Graham said AquaLogic has helped BEA increase sales to existing customers, citing a deal with a West Coast bank that went from $3.5 million to $5 million thanks to AquaLogic. He also said the product, which was launched this summer, is also opening doors to new customers.

Graham shrugged off recent claims from Oracle Corp. (ORCL) that it had surpassed BEA in terms of market share. He says its rival often bundles its applications server with its database for free.

"It's a joke," he said.
