*OT* John, perhaps the others sparring with you about 'letting the market fix this, not the government' have conveniently forgotten about those 'government tax breaks allowing quick writeoffs of the LARGEST SUVs' <ggg>. I strongly agree with you about the SUV problem. As far as safety is concerned, I've read some studies where SUV's are less safe than cars in accident avoidance situations because of worse braking, tipping over in severe lane change manuevers, etc. If this is a national security issue where additional billions are going to 'less than savory' regimes, it seems like a no brainer. On the negative side, it sounds like you are well aware that the domestic auto industry makes money only on trucks, and they are already in a jam, so they will put pressure on the Feds to lay off. They also might have additional ammo on their side by whispering things like 'does the federal gov't want to take over GM and Ford pension obligations'? US auto industry is just a sad story, losing market share forever. We can build a B2, but can't we make a domestic Honda Accord?
