John, thanks for the support. I was beginning to think the entire thread was libertarian in a country which is just the opposite. If we are going to have manipulation of the market, let's have it benefit the citizens of the country, and not special interests like the oil companies.

The benefits of oil efficiency are so clear, that no one can argue the other side. We manipulate so many social and economic policies, why not manipulate one that will actually do a world of good for the citizens of the country? It's a no brainer... gasoline efficiency is good, it puts money in all our pockets (bottom up).

Yes, it could nail the US auto companies (and their stockholders). Or maybe it would be a wake up call. The 5%/25% gas consumption should be a red flag... if it isn't, then their problems are too deeply rooted for reform.
