I read the full article from the WSJ which has a little more detail on this Ozzie/Gates memo.

The thing that struck me as really amazing was the mention of salesforce.com as a company that has "created new businesses based on direct internet connections with users", as if salesforce.com is a disruptive threat to msft.

Salesforce.com is not a star growth company in the same veign as Google. It has been around since the mid-90s and started as a cheap alternative to Siebel and Oracle CRM. Not exactly groundbreaking. Why didn't msft react to this thread THEN?

This entire episode reminds me of IBM circa-1992 with officevision. IBM couldn't get any answer out the door for any of the new techs like gui-based apps, an answer was always "right around the corner". sheesh
