178,000 owners of DVD players can't be wrong (can they?). Unit sales of selected video products, August 1997:

cemacity.org

"DVD players, which have been on retail shelves for not even six months, posted unit sales of 34,000 in August, bringing their year-to-date total to some 178,000 units. The corresponding decline of laserdisc players continued, however, as sales tumbled 75 percent in August and 67 percent for the first eight months of 1997."

It will be interesting to see how the Divx announcement affects sales in subsequent months.
