These are some very good numbers for Qualcomm....Samsung predicting 1 million a month in WCDMA handset sales and an LG manager talking about 45 to 50 million WCDMA units in Europe next year (vs. Q's prediction of 40 million).

Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics Vie For Leadership In WCDMA Phone Market

Thursday, November 10, 2005 By Kim Won-suk

In a bid to take leadership in the world 3rd generation WCDMA phone market, two major mobile phone makers Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are seeking to encroach on each other's accounts, triggering relentless competition.

Industry sources said Wednesday Samsung Electronics recently began supplying WCDMA phones to a part of local affiliates of Hutchison, one of major mobile phone supply channels of LG Electronics. In response, LG Electronics is seeking ways of supplying its WCDMA handsets to Vodafone, a partner of Samsung Electronics, while having recently entered a contract with Hutchison to provide 1 million units of 3G phones.

Industry experts foresee an inevitable change in partnership relations between Samsung Electronics and Vodafone, and between LG Electronics and Hutchison.

"We began supplying 3G mobile phones to a part of local affiliates of Hutchison. And we expect to ship over 1 million units of such phones a month to leading overseas wireless communication carriers, including Vodafone and Hutchison's affiliates, after November," said a manager at Samsung Electronics.

Stunned by Samsung Electronics' offensive, LG Electronics is tackling to form partnership relations with Vodafone, one of prime customers of Samsung Electronics. LG Electronics has already agreed with Cingular Wireless of the United States to supply WCDMA phones.

"We are reported that 3G phones of Samsung Electronics began hitting markets in Australia and Italy via Hutchison. LG Electronics is also expanding customers to TIM of Italy and Orange of France," said a manager at LG Electronics. In the first half of this year, LG Electronics rose to second post in the world WCDMA handset market, much attributing to the supply to Hutchison.

"In the WCDMA phone market in Europe predicted to reach 45 million to 50 million units next year
, competition between the two rivals is seen to heat up. As we sealed an additional contract to supply 3G phones, we reconfirmed close partnership with Hutchison," said a manager at LG Electronics.
