But I think it's pretty clear Saddam thought the US wouldn't interfere. Saddam wasn't a stupid man, and he would have known he didn't stand a chance against the US. Now I don't think Glaspie's remarks were the only reason he thought that the US wouldn't interfere, but I do think Saddam was used to viewing the world the way he believed it to be, rather than the way it actually is, and Glaspie's remarks helped him slot the US response in to a niche that fit with his plans (which reminds me of the way our current administration "thinks", actually).
