[India] Govt to make tapping solar energy mandatory for all new buildings
New Delhi | November 10, 2005 5:06:22 PM IST

In a bid to optimise the renewable sources of energy and to meet the growing demands of power in the country, the government is planning to make tapping solar energy mandatory for all new buildings and complexes.

"Tapping the vast potential of solar energy should be made mandatory for all new building and complexes, in a bid to save power as also to meet the shortage," said Oscar Fernandes, Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation in his inaugural address at National Convention of Electrical Engineers organised by the Institution of Engineers (India), Delhi Chapter here on Thursday.

"Solar energy is such a renewable source that even countries that get hardly 25 percent of sunlight, tap this source for meeting their power requirements," he said.

He said that more attention should be paid for optimal utilisation of renewable sources of energy, to meet the growing power demands of the country.

He also emphasised on the need for enhancing capacity utilisation in thermal and other sources of energy, (ANI)
