Gary;

I managed to get in to see NEWP, they were very impressive. The short position is actually a giant "short sale against the box"

What happened is that NEWP acquired a company in Minn (I believe) for stock, the owners of that private company then shorted NEWP stock to lock in their gains without creating a taxable event. This sounds reasonable to me.

Their presentation was entitled "Evolving Technologies from Research to Industrial Applications" There are issues in Europe because the R&D market there is flat, and they said that Asia is robust.

NEWP is focusing on three markets:

Semiconductor Equipment (Vibration isolation systems)
Computer Peripherals (Optics, Vibration isolation, motion subsystems)
Fiber Optic Communications (Fiber pigtailers, Autoaligning bonding workstations, laser diode testing stations)

For the first 6 months of 97 these three "strategic segments" accounted for 20.3m in rev, the R&D market was 23.3m and other was 19.3m

The strategic segments grew 23% y/y, the other grew 5% and R&D grew 1%. Total sales growth is 8%.
