Asian Bulletin:

China has 8th bird flu outbreak in a month
Big News Network
Saturday 12th November, 2005 (UPI)

The Chinese government says an eight outbreak of bird flu within a month is creating a very serious situation because the virus seems to be spreading.

Prime Minister Wen Jiabao issued the warning after the confirmation that another animal was infected with the lethal H5N1 strain of bird flu, the BBC reports.

Four sick people are thought possibly to have the virus as well but that has not been confirmed.

Health experts worldwide fear the H5N1 strain, now passed easily from animal-to-animal, may mutate and become easily passed to and between humans, setting of a pandemic.

More than 60 people have died from it since 2003 when it was found in Southeast Asia. It has since spread through Asia and into Europe.

China said 2,500 birds have died from the bird flu and 30,000 are being killed as a preventative measure.

Millions have died or been culled worldwide.

Adding to fears in China is the report that fake vaccines were sold in Liaoning province, which means millions of birds may be presumed to be safe while carrying the virus unnoticed.
