Do you actually believe this crap?

Why a conference? Why not just give the money out directly – maybe through USAID? Because we’re apparently so hated in the Middle East as a result of our actions in Iraq that our aid money can no longer be given directly - or as the Times puts it, we need to “remove the taint of American fingerprints in a region where anti-American sentiments run high.”

Do you actually believe Americans cannot give money directly to Arabs that want to start businesses in the private sector because Arab entrepreneurs won't accept American money? If so, you're a fool.

They can give me the money, I can find you plenty of Arab entrepreneurs that will accept it and use it to start their own businesses.

Why doesn't the writer discuss the facts that since the removal of Saddam Hussein we have seen elections in Egypt which for the first time feature more than one candidate for president, the removal of Syria from Lebanon and greater expression for self rule in Lebanon, local elections in Saudi Arabia, women elected to parliament in Bahrain, two Palestinian elections, and the emergence of Hamas and similar jihadi groups as political forces rather than just military forces?

Oh, here's your source:

Even unnamed “American officials” have acknowledged that, rather than helping, the war has dramatically set back the cause of Middle Eastern democratization.

Maybe the reason your unnamed "American official" (in quotes? why the quotes?) wants to remain unnamed because he is completely wrong.
