Mr. Huang, 53, contended that his drive against corruption led to assassination attempts and forced him to wear a bulletproof vest. His letter initially prompted an outpouring of support and favorable articles in the state-run press. But the Communist Party moved quickly to silence him, several supporters of Mr. Huang said.
