On the plus side for the Islamists, they have a lot of numbers and money. On the minus side, their ideology is basically a fantasy, and doesn't stand up to reality checks very well. What country that has tried Islamism for any length of time is still in favor of it? Iran? Afghanistan? What is Al Qaeda's strategy? That they will kill a bunch of people, then the Muslim street will rise to support them, and reestablish the Caliphate. Does it look like it's working? This is a fantasy ideology, the "dream palace" of the Arabs. Al Qaeda got the Arab street roused up in Amman, but not the way they wanted. Somebody in the Mossad is chuckling over the irony of the Al Qaeda blowing up a Palestinian wedding party and killing the PA head of secret police. After a certain amount of time, even Al Jazeerah notices that Al Qaeda is killing mostly Muslims, not infidels. Furthermore, terrorism depends on shock value to succeed. After a while, the shock value of suicide bombings starts to decline. Without the shock value, they are just limited attacks against targets of little military significance.
