NOR flash suppliers fulfilling only 40% of demand, say industry sources

Hans Wu, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Monday 14 November 2005]

Even after repeated price increases for Silicon Storage Technology (SST)-made low-density NOR flash, industry sources are saying that prices may rise another 25% as supply is lagging demand by 60%.

Although the local Taiwan distributor of SST recently expressed doubt that the price increases will persist for more than one quarter, industry sources are now saying that the supply gap has increased. Some customers are being told to source supply from other vendors while other customers are told that they receive products only once a quarter, the sources noted.

Increased demand coming from the unexpected rise of Bluetooth and GPS applications, combined with a lack of IC substrate and backend production capacity, are said to be the two major causes of the supply gap, the sources explained. Sales for 4Mbit and 8Mbit NOR flash chips have shot up ten fold on year, while demand for SST made low-density NOR flash chips is 25% ahead of that, the sources stated.
