Actually, they were the Democratic Republican Party, just to confuse the shills :-), and had the Federalists as their opponents. Later the Federalists became/were taken over by the Whigs. The Whigs shattered, regrouped, and energed as several parties that fed into the present day Republican Party, whose first Presidential candidate, John C. Fremont (well known in California history- -he stole the state from the Mexicans), lost. Theit next Presidential candidate was Abraham Lincoln. He won and this time the Union shattered. And the rest, as they say, is history.
