Know what else is ironic? That in their idealistic forms, democracy and communism should be the same. That is, that the power is in the peoples' hands and that each citizen has a voice. But of course, the reality is communism becomes a dictatorship, and democracy can quickly get corrupted by the rich and powerful buying and grabbing so much power that the little guy gets trampled on. Also, there is no way of sharing everything equally. It is human nature that some will grab more than others and want to hold onto it.

There is no perfect government, there are just well-balanced periods of governance when things seem to work relatively well and both the rich and poor are fairly content. Such a period occured during the Clinton 90's. While not perfect, it was as close as we've gotten. Conservatives would say the Reagan era was the same, but the GOP's biggest flaw it that it almost always side with the bosses against the workers. So the Reagan era did not reward average people as well as the Clinton era did.

Then the X factor becomes all the social issues which are played up by both sides. Frankly though, moderate changes in abortion, sexuality, prayer in schools and gun laws aren't going to make much difference either way. It's mostly a lot of hype.
