It is not particularly good for birds or furred marine mammals. But the impact on everything else is fairly minimal. What was the worst thing about the Valdez was the cleanup. They used surfactants, which is a fancy word for detergents. That impacted a lot in the water column, the surfactants strip off the wax that the larger plankton use to keep afloat. In addition, they used sand and other materials to sink the oil to keep it off the coast line. So when the bacteria got to work, it depleted the oxygen and caused the bottom to go anaerobic. And that wiped out a lot of the bottom fauna. In addition, the oil soaked into the sediments which meant it took years longer than it should have to break down.
