The Battle for the Exurbs
By RUY TEIXIERA
Washington — For some time now, conservatives have tended to see America's exurbs - those fast-growing counties at the fringes of metropolitan areas populated by legions of young families - as a source of Republican strength that will, over time, turn the Democrats into a permanent minority party. George W. Bush's strong showing in the exurbs in 2004 seemed to validate the thesis. When it comes to understanding exurban voters, Republicans just seemed to "get it."

Kaine spoke to the exurban voters about issues that concerned them......sprawl, schools, roads and taxes. The GOP assumed those voters were just like them. Hopefully, that assumption is wrong not just in VA. I still thing the GOP acts like a regional party whose base is primarily the South.

And the Dems need to grow with the issues and understand that the American voter has become more complicated. Times have changed from Clinton but I don't think the Dems have changed with the times.
