"We all remember 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl."

Two totally different accidents. TMI got as far as it did because the workers did exactly the wrong thing at every step. No question that workers need better training, but there still wasn't a release, although the reactor was toast.

Chernobyl was the result of a poorly thought out experiment on a reactor type that only existed in the Soviet Union. When the reactor vessel breached, the graphite moderator caught on fire. And that is when things really got out of control.

I stepped away from the environmental movement a long time ago. Too much emotion and too little thought. Opposition to nuclear power is one of those issues. It ain't perfect and there are problems. But compare it to hydroelectric, for example. Damming a river has serious environmental impact. It changes the local weather, and can put pressure on nearby faults and trigger quakes.
