[miningmx.com] -- HARMONY Gold is selling 25 million shares, or about 5.1%, of Gold Fields, according to a report by Bloomberg News which quoted Merrill Lynch as its source for the information.

Yegs Ramiah, a director at Merrill's Johannesburg office, told Bloomberg that the sale of Gold Fields had started. Bernard Swanepoel, Harmony CEO, declined to comment when called by the news agency.

In June, Harmony Gold sold over half of its 11.5% stake of Gold Fields raising R1.97bn ($315m) helping boost its cash reserves which were nearly exhausted at the time.

Harmony has since said it was not a long-term holder of the remaining Gold Fields shares.
