Alex - any pretext to get your foot in the door is a great way to get continuing business opportunities. I have seen it repeatedly happen in my 20 years in software. It seems to occur in huge corporations and small shops and the beneficiaries I have seen range from 3 man firms to huge internationals. I think it's a natural reaction to do continuing business with someone who has done a good job for you in the past. They also have a name and a face. Another aspect is the use of preferred vendor lists. In my company, which is monsterous, we have a preferrd list of say 8 software consulting firms. If I need a person, I can fill out a short requirements form, and the paper shufflers can go automatically to the firms on the list. If I need a y2k specialist team with software, I have to produce a masterwork to go outside the list. But now you are on the list virtually forever. The y2k stuff will be big news for maybe 5 years (definitely not resolved by 2k), but a company that can use those projects as a springboard to future business is in good shape. Performance will be key for repeats of course.

Ongoing, I expect the turn of the year to make more companies and governments realize their impending doom, at the same time that a lot of budgets open coffers.
luck to all,
Mike
