Same as a Ponzi or any other pyramid scheme. It depends on the willingness of new entrants/reentrants to believe that the promises (of repayment, of interest, of retained earnings or dividends) will be kept. If enough disbelieve, then the entire structure is brought in to question. Which is why fiat currencies have never survived; the promises (of stored value) are kept only to the extent necessary to keep the gamblers in the casino, to keep all wired into the Matrix, however you want to describe it. It's a belief system at it's core, no different from Islam or Christianity or Judaism......might mean we have to modify an old joke, to wit:

Q: What's the difference between praying in a casino (bank, broker) and praying in a Church?
