"Pearl Harbour was provoked as an excuse to get into the war in Europe." Evidently you weren't around at the time. As soon as the Japanese attacked the American public turned their eyes west to the Pacific and forgot about Europe. Congress was determined not to fight a two front war.

Four days after Pearl Harbour, Hitler suddenly declared war on the US. He was emboldened by radiopictures he saw of the ships lying on their side in Pearl Harbour and his own conquest of most of Europe. He was at the gates of Moscow then. On June 21 he had only the British to conquer. On December 11 he was at war with the British, the Soviet Union and the US. Hitler took a few days to concoct his speech to the German people embodying his excuse to get into the war against the US, not the way you said it.
I remember those four days like they were yesterday. I feared that the US would stop helping the British and that Hitler would continue his victories in Russia. What a relief when Hitler declared war! I was at university then. I couldn't find a single fellow student who had any doubts; the allies would suffer but finally beat them, both Germany and Japan.
The US participation in WWII was not preceded by lies a la Bush and his crowd. Hitler murdered 15 million Russians and other Slavs, one million gypsies, six million Jews, more than a hundred thousand Germans who had been labor union leaders, Communists,or just people of good will who had opposed him on his way up to power. Helping Britain was the natural thing to do. But the American public did not want to go to war. Hitler attacked the US.
