Man is the only animal that goes insane because man is the only animal with an imagination. Specifically, man can anticipate pain. If the author had ever owned a dog, and that dog had a habit of snaffling food left unattended, he'd know that dogs can too anticipate pain! My Labradors know full well that if one of them pinches chicken left defrosting on the side, it will be spanked and put outside... and it's always pretty easy to tell which one is the culprit (if there's any doubt) because the guilty dog is the one slinking to the back door with low head and twitching tail - even before the theft has been spotted :-) (Sorry, I know this is OT. but they are centrist dogs, I'm sure).
